We need to ask the question how much of my diet is fast/processed food? For instance; processed meats, sugary drinks, packaged snacks, frozen desserts, refined breakfast cereals. How has the food been grown or produced? How has the soil been treated, is it dead from pesticides?
These are difficult questions to ask and sometimes inconvenient but the quality of the food that we eat can affect the health of our guts. We ideally want to eat meals that are alive with vitamins, minerals and nutrients, this is good for our health, good for the earth and good for the treatment of animals we feed on.
Healthy nutrition ought not to be reserved for those who can afford it but everyone’s right. Sadly, this is not the case. The ideology of factory farming has backfired; sick animals, sick soil, sick rivers, equates to sick humans. Our earth, sea and air have become contaminated by toxins, microplastics and forever chemicals. Government regulations do not go far enough to protect the health of its citizens.
There has been an alarming increase in chronic and serious diseases in young people that were associated with older age groups. Colorectal cancer, for instance has become a leading cause of death for individuals under 50. Rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol have risen significantly among young adults as too have rates of anxiety and depression.
Choosing organic (however much we can afford), local farm produce, home grown vegetables or bio-dynamic makes a big statement to our well-being and the food industry. Many of us could cut our food budget by eating a little less meat and investing in quality for the rest of our grocery shop.
